When creating ED3N, I only had the idea of, I want to build a horror game, I didn’t know where to begin this was the first time I had created a game inside the unreal engine and taught myself how to use it through a lot of trial and error. As I started going through more and more tutorials an outline began to form, I wanted to create a space that reflected the current feelings of confinement within this year. The feelings surrounding Covid-19, that it’s the end of the world, you’re stuck inside simply wanting to leave and the only thing you can communicate with is a dubious voice on the other side of a screen. All these things brought me inspiration when working with E3EN. Then I thought, well how could we make this have more symbolism, this can’t be a long story but what can we pack into it with the timeframe we have. Using themes, quotes and names from Christianity we developed our ideas further and merged basic elements into the facility. A good example being the year 2546 referencing Matthew 25:46 a passage that talks about eternal life and punishment. The idea that the world is cyclical, that in the beginning certain events play out and at the end the same events play time and time again. These are concepts that have stuck with me for a long time and with my first large freeform project like this, I almost had a need to incorporate them into the project itself. Telling stories, playing with concepts and the medium, these are all things that matter and as a storyteller I find its more important now than ever to do something you like, learn something interesting and change.
